billboards

i think about these more than how i give back because they are everywhere. ads for diapers, cars, shampoo, electronics, you name it, there's probably a billboard on it somewhere in sai gon. it's such a juxaposition. buildings of all sizes. some tall as can be partly covered in a billboard. some short with rusty roofs, no commercial sponsorship for them. the subliminal messages start now. has business done vietnam good? somehow seeing these big companies take over makes me leary... but my uncles say things are getting better. has things gotten better for the quality of life for the people in china when it opened its doors to more trade and commercialization?

i had no idea there's a correlation between wealth and suicide rates. makes ya think about the definition of wealth -- wealth at the cost of your life? what type of wealth is that?

it reminds me of another contradictory correlation. the more you work, the less productive you get. to my understanding, the french work fewer hours and accomplish more week whereas the americans work more hours and don't necessarily accomplish more than the french.

i think what my uncle means by "getting better" is more westernization... more stores... more tourists... more jobs... more money to be earned and spent... and if this gets outta hand, capitalism has a heavy price indeed.

thanks for sharing a bit about your dad's experience growing up. yes, wealth can be a fleeting state.

makes me think... is there a correlation between people with low incomes having more faith, being more religious, and enjoying simple pleasures more than people with higher incomes?

nah, i don't think you undermined my family here adn what they have gone thru in your story about your dad at all. it's all good... especially since we flicked off the "independence palace." now we just have to work up the courage to do the same thing but moon the palace instead!
